 REVEALED: SHORT WORKWEEKS SUCK!!!
Back to Full Blog

This may not be news to anyone out there, but when you have a short week at work...say, only 4 days...it will be a week that completely sucks. Not just at work, mind you....but in all aspects of one's life!

BEHOLD: MY SHORT WEEK ADVENTURES---

  • I returned to work on Tuesday after having taken a long weekend to attend my cousin's college graduation in Myrtle Beach, SC only to find that my esteemed colleague Maria Alicia Louisa Fernandez Gonzales Hernandez Jackson had written a scathing email to me because I'd not documented a work order in the manner she preferred. That in itself was bad enough, but she had apparently grown a set of kahoonas while writing it because she copied not only our boss but his assistant, a field manager, and TWO field service guys!!

As one can imagine I was so mad that my head spontaneously ignited, blew off of my shoulders, went through the ceiling & then the roof of our office building, went into obrit, and then rocketed back to Earth and landed with a *thud* back onto my shoulders. I debated all day on how to handle the situation, and I finally decided that the best course of action was to compose an email to my boss and tell him exactly how I felt about the situation. (*Note: I didn't hear from the boss on Wednesday, but I was informed on Thursday that Maria Alicia was officially reprimanded for what she'd done)

MeanWednesday was as much fun as a barrel of rabid monkeys taking hits of acid with a tequila chaser. I'd scheduled some work for a piece of equipment located at a facility in one of the areas I oversee. A long story short, my field guy drove over 3 hours to get to the place to do the work but was told when he got there that they had "no idea" that the work had been scheduled!! Even though my guy had called to confirm the appointment BEFORE he started the drive, the bonehead at the facility swore up and down that **I** had made the mistake in scheduling! This particular incident ended up involving some very heated discussions between the following people: ME...the field manager...the doofus who turned the field guy away....the CEO of the facility...two other field guys...and my boss' assistant!

When I bought Maurice the Car a few weeks ago I knew that he was lacking a couple of things..such as a CD player and front speakers. So I buy this car ready portable CD player, and Wednesday night begin to start burning some music onto disc. There are THREE computers currently in use at my house (all of which have the capability of burning CDs), but not a damn one of them would burn a freakin' CD!! This caused me MUCH frustration, but I'm happy to report that after 3 days of trying to get my tunes up and running I've finally succeeded. Ironically it was the computer I don't use anymore because it's a piece of crap that finally worked!!

PoutyIn light of the fact that my vacations always lead to certain doom, I've now decided that I'll never take vacation again!!

Sounds like the trick contractors who've won government contracts pull when the government oversight is scheduled to come visit and "inspect." Even after the inspectors have assured the contractors know and will be ready, they sometimes become very vanished when you arrive to do the oversight part. I have been advised this is a problem by several government employees who've had it happen to them.

Ugh, Bry, just curl up in a fetal position and sleep through it on your days off, then, go off and enjoy some walks, if you can. Just try to enjoy the good weather out.

Generally short work weeks translate to working four 10's to make up for taking off one 8. Of course some people are beat into working way more hours than they are paid for anyway. It is one reason for instance in the teaching profession new teachers are not even sticking it out five years! That and all the disrespect and abuse I'm told are making it a difficult job to rationalize doing, in spite of it's importance and the reward of helping little people grow up to be thinking adults. Go figure.
