THIS SIDE OF 40: Life With BryM

 BRY-M'S SHATTERED SATURDAY
Back to Full Blog

After the week I've had, the ONLY thing I asked for was a little peace and quiet this weekend. I swear..that's ALL that I wanted--just some time to take it easy, maybe work on going through some stuff in the spare room I've been needing to get rid of...

Clearly I was wrong in my assumption that my request was a small one because shortly after 1pm today my day went completely to hell.....

While I'm in the bathroom showering, I hear the phone ringing....of course I can't answer it while I'm soaking wet, so when I get out, I check the caller ID to see who'd called. It was Cindy's number, but she hadn't left a message. I figured that she was probably calling to see if I wanted to come over to hang out by the pool for awhile, so I decided I'd call her back after I finished getting dressed. About 5 minutes later, I try calling and get a busy signal (Cindy is one of the few folks in the world who still doesn't have call waiting!) so I decide to just try again later and I go into the den to watch some tv. Since the den has 4 huge windows that cast a very annoying bright spot on the tv, I'd hung dark drapes and closed them & the blinds....which prevents me from seeing anything going on outside, such as cars [or an ambulance!] coming down the street.

A few minutes after that, the doorbell rings....I figure it's Cindy popping over for a visit since she couldn't get me on the phone, so I head into the living room to answer the door. It wasn't Cindy at all, but my other neighbor Jeremy. So I answer the door and he tells me, "Cindy wants to know if you can come over and take care of her dogs for a little while....she's really sick." I give him this weird look and look past him to Cindy's house, where I see an AMBULANCE in her driveway!!!
Shocked  Of course I shot past Jeremy and was at her house in less than 10 seconds [although at some point I'd put on my socks and shoes, though I don't remember doing that!] and go in to find two paramedics hovering over Cindy while she's barely conscious in a recliner!! I asked what happened and she tells me that she had been weeding in her back yard and had apparently gotten bitten by some fire ants and was feeling really sick. I could tell right away that she was in VERY bad shape...she was swollen up, barely conscious, and was turning different colors! Now here she is, on the verge [literally] of death and the only thing she's worried about is her dogs!! I assured her that I'd take care of her dogs while the paramedics took her to the hospital....and then they took her away with sirens blaring and lights flashing. Meanwhile, another neighbor had come over and asks me, "she looked really bad...do you think she did something stupid?" I looked at her and said, "Um, no. If you visited her on a regular basis, you'd know that she's doing a lot better these days (after Kevin's death) and the thoughts of doing herself in have pretty well dissipated." What a bitch.

Anyway....THANKFULLY Cindy got to the hospital in time and was saved literally just in the nick of time. Her blood pressure when she got to the hospital had dropped to 50 over 30...no that's NOT a misprint....it was really that low! Faint It was amazing that she was even still conscious at that point...or even alive really! But anyway, here's what had happened: she'd been out in the back yard doing some weeding at an area behind her pool...the ground is sort of raised up....the landscaping that has a retaining wall (you all know the look I'm talking about)...well it's about chest height on her, and while she was weeding, the bottom of her arm was resting on top of the retaining wall...which was unfortunately the home of a colony of fire ants...these little shits are all over the place out here....anyway, when they're disturbed, they will swarm (like army ants) and they are actually quite poisionous in large numbers.....so Cindy didn't realize what was going on until her arm started to burn and she saw some crawling on her.....then she realized there were LOTS of them on her...so she runs to the pool and jumps in to get them off of her....but by then it was too late. They had already gotten all over her arm and even into her bathing suit and were biting her all up and down the front of her body!! While she was getting out of the pool she started to feel faint and just barely made it into the house to call me. Well when she didn't get me {and didn't leave a voicemail!!} she called 911----and spent the rest of the afternoon in the emergency room. The docs at the hospital told her she was very lucky to have survived because she'd had literally HUNDREDS of those little evil bastards on her....so now she has to carry an EPI-pen because if she gets bitten again the reaction will come on faster and even stronger!!!

Needless to say, it scared the living shit out of Chris, Cindy, and me!!!! I told her that we now have to come up with some sort of plan to alert each other when something like this happens.....and she made a good point....she said something like this could have happened to any of us and we wouldn't think about leaving a voicemail....and we're not always alarmed if there's no message because we're always calling just to say hi...which is why I didn't think much of getting a busy signal when I tried to call back! Being that she's alone over there now, she could have died had she not been able to call 911....so we're going to get walkie-talkie's or something to alert each other in case of an emergency.....

GAAAAAHHHHH!! Can I at least have SUNDAY with a little peace??!!!

That is insane. I had no idea that fire ants could do that! I am happy to hear that she is okay though.

Wow, I am very glad to hear that your friend is doing good now. I wish you a peaceful, uneventful Sunday! We all deserve one day out of the week to just sit back and relax that's for sure!!!

I was reading your post, got the to the shower part and thought oh boy here we got with some soft porn Bry style. After I got the visions out of my head I read the rest of your post. MY god is Cindy ever lucky. I am not familiar with fire ants but they sound like nasty little suckers. She is lucky to have friends like you guys who will pitch in and help when things happen. As for the idiot who basically asked is she tried to kill herself, what an ASS!! Cindy seems to be coping better everytime you post about her and with a support system like she has she will be able to deal with the ups and downs of losing someone.

Is there a way to get rid of these ants so she will not have the same problem again? I realize that is would be impossible to completely get rid of them but is there is way to make the area less friendly for them? At least she had the pool to jump into but the scary part is what if she would have passed out in the pool? Not a good thing to think about.

I thank God that Cindy will be ok (as much as you talk about her I feel as I know her). I probably would have not left a voicemail either. She is lucky to have you and Chris in her life. Walkie Talkies sounds like a great idea....

my best to you that you find peace and relaxation on sunday.

NEVER turn your phones ringer off....even for a moment of peace and quiet. We used to do it all the time becouse creditors and such would call, one time we had the ringer off, we missed a call telling us that hubbys mom died. And our daughter was with her....

Thank God that everything worked out and Cindy was saved. You sure had some scare that day! I also think that it's a great idea to have some means to communicate. Living alone can prove to be quite hazardous, as I should know. All best, and here's for a peaceful Sunday that you truly deserve!

Well that was really scary. Thank God we don't have fireants around here.

Regular ants are pests enough.

But Anex we do have them.. HEre is what I found..
Another kind of ant relatively new to Canada is the fire ant. There are over 200 species of fire ants, and on a glance seem similar to pharaoh ants — they are about the same size and typically yellow. But they all have an unpleasant habit of stinging en masse when they are attacked. So watch for them ok... We have them here on the NOrth Shore of Lake Erie........

Fire ants are so scary, my first acquaintance was while living in TX and my son was standing on top of one of their holes and they were climbing his leg and he started screaming because their bites are so painful. He was small enough to pick up and I brushed those buggers off him as fast as I could. It is a reason why I would not like to return to TX to live, for fear of them harming my horses.

So glad Cindy is doing better, ugh, you never know what you are going to get yourself into while gardening, my husband has had two bouts with poison ivy this summer, oozing and prednisone needed, it was horrible.

luv ya,
n. Enjoy your sunday on your porch with some sweet imbibe.

Wow Bry, that is terrible. I'm glad she's going to be ok. It's good to have some kind of plan with your neighbors in case of an emergency. We don't have anything in place. Something to think about.

Right now I have those teeney weeney ants all over the place. They outside on the corner of the house. My son leaves food and stuff all over his room so I think that's what enticed them to come inside. Now they are coming up the wall and into the kitchen!! They won't be agood selling point for our house. I've been putting stuff down and hopefully we can get rid of them. I'm not sure what a fire ant looks like but I'm going to google it.

Hope you Sunday is peaceful. I'm trying to sort etc.

OMG I am so glad Cindy is ok!! I'm sitting here itching just thinking of that. I think walkie talkies are a good idea for all of you so you can keep tabs on each other. Hopefully nothing bad like that will every happen again to any of you!!

My son is double allergic to ivy.. We get this stuff that is availble over the counter they use it for exzema.. It works by drawing out the oils from the ivy cleared up and gone in 3-4 days..
Either that or he scratches it until it bleeds and then pour Javex bleach on it works the same.
Have a nice day

Bry_M,

Having some hospital work experience - I can tell you that Cindy's BP was very low!!!

I hope they have figured out the problem and are addressing it

Getting a call like that in the AM will definitely wake a guy up!!!

Miyelo: I'd always heard that the bite from a fire ant hurt like hell, but I had NO idea their bite could cause an allergic reaction like that!! Regardless, I thank God that Cindy is ok...so soon after having lost Kevin (her husband & a great friend of mine as well) I could not have handled losing Cindy!

Christine: heh heh Even my keyboard would blush if I tried to write that sort of stuff ...and yeah I'm VERY much relieved that Cindy is still with us...even though she drives me nuts sometimes, she's good people and I'd hate life in the cul-de-sac without her!

by Bry_M (PM , CC ) on Sunday June 22, 2008 @ 7:55 PM

Buffy: I learned a long time ago about turning the ringers off on the phone--I almost missed the call that my brother was hurt in a motorcycle wreck by doing that! And we did decide on the walkie talkie thing...that way if necessary, we can just hit the "page" button to alert each other that something is wrong!

Dot: Yes, I don't think I've ever been so relieved as I was when I got to the hospital to pick her up and saw she was ok!!

Anexplorer: The strange thing is that I don't think we've always had fire ants in this area...if I recall correctly they've only been really bad in the area maybe 20 years or so....

by Bry_M (PM , CC ) on Sunday June 22, 2008 @ 8:01 PM

Gloria: I'm thinking HORRIFIED is a better word! LOL The bad thing about fire ants is that they are so small you really don't know they're on you until it's really too late!!
|<   <<   >>   >|

by Bry_M (PM , CC ) on Sunday June 22, 2008 @ 8:04 PM

n.lynn: I don't blame you for being cautious about your horses--I couldn't stand the thought of a poor animal getting caught up in an army of those little devil ants!

by Bry_M (PM , CC ) on Sunday June 22, 2008 @ 8:07 PM

Bohemian: I have to admit I was like your son when I was younger...I'd sneak food into my bedroom and it drove my mom NUTS because we'd get ants too and all she had to do was follow the trail! Be careful though...those very well COULD be fire ants getting into your house...look around the perimeter of your foundation...that's where they'll set up housekeeping and then invade your home!

Bry...haven't you learned...you just don't get a break...not even on a Sunday!

You really do need a show of your own!

I'm verrrrryyyyy glad your friend will be o.k.! What a scare.

I won't even bring up the fact tomorrow is....

M....M.....M.....aw fruckit...I can't bring myself to say it! So I won't....

Miss Lou: The funny thing is that we've talked about something like that before (walkie talkies etc) but we kind of brushed it off saying that we'd just scream really loud if anything happened....I guess now we're not taking it so lightly!

Rubble: Funny you should mention that! I actually DO have this thing on BlogTV, but I kind of hit a wall because I wasn't sure WHAT to do with it! DOH!

Bry_M,

if you are an EMT, you know that you are still living at 50/30 - here is the issue, the tipping factor - does it keep going down, or can you catch it at that point and begin reversing it - fortunately, they caught Cindy's before it dropped to 40/20..

take care

She's SO lucky! I hate fire ants. We have them here & they are so mean. It really hurts when one gets you, so having a swarm of them would be too much to take. I use AMDRO ant killer on mine. They also make stuff specific for fire ants too. She definitely needs to get some & use it.

Bry they are around the foundation. We have a brick patio at ground level which is outside my son's bedroom and that's where they are!!! I've gotta google these ants and see just what a fire ant is. I can't believe all the stuff he leaves in his bedroom

take care!
