Today, my roommate Chris called his insurance company to see if they would cover a medication that will help him stop smoking. This medication is REALLY good...it's already helped my cousin quit as well as a lot of his co-workers.
It's not that I'm surprised by their answer, just really PISSED. Of course, the insurance company said that "it's not covered."
Now, for the last few years, especially since George Bush did away with any laws governing big business, the insurance companies have been crying in their coffee saying that "due to increased costs caused by those who smoke, and the cute little animated commercials from drug companies, we have to double your rates."
So, not that I'd actually expect anyone at an insurance company to have any common sense, but if there is a medication out there that is quickly proving to help people stop smoking, thereby lowering these costs that "concern" the insurance companies SO much, why then would they not cover the cost of it??!!
I'll give another example of the stupidity of an insurance company. Back when I had gastric bypass surgery in 2004, it was pretty simple to get insurance to cover it. That was Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois. When I dropped that plan a year later and then applied for insurance with BCBS of North Carolina, I was quoted a price of $895 a month because I'd had the surgery. Even though my health was BETTER than it had EVER been as a direct RESULT of the surgery!
I feel very sorry for anyone who works for an insurance company. I'd be afraid of people waiting for me after work ready to pelt me with garbage!
Ugh. Ok, I'm getting off my soapbox now. I think I'm going to go and light up a cigarette and blow the smoke into an insurance company worker's face.
