I mentioned in last night's post that a co-worker of mine and I did something really nice for another co-worker. I didn't get into a lot of detail because frankly I was pooped. I've got a bit more energy tonight, so I want to share the whole experience.
"Joe", who's the kind of guy who wears a three piece suit to work just for the fun of it was a big thorn in my side when I first started this job. Not that he's a jerk or anything, but just very "by the book", and a "company man"...very annoying to say the least. Nice guy, just not the kind of person that I'd have ever thought I'd associate with outside of work.
Anyway, the other day he tells me that he's got an idea. He wants the two of us to help out a co-worker. We'll call her "Sue". I knew that Sue was a single mom, but Joe tells me that she's been struggling a lot lately with the upkeep of the house she'd just bought. The fact that she'd even gotten approved for the loan was a miracle in itself, but she was very proud of the place and was a bit bummed because she hadn't had the time to do anything to the yard. Keeping up with a 19 month old child doesn't afford much of an opportunity to do a lot of mowing or weeding! So I thought it was a great idea and I told Joe to count me in.
I come home and tell the roomie about what Joe and I have planned, and he offers to help. That was a good thing because to be quite honest, I despise doing yardwork. I mean REALLY DESPISE it. So I knew that if the roomie was there, he'd want to do most of the work.
So the roomie and I arrive at Sue's house yesterday after work. He breaks out the weed eater and I get the lawn mower. Did I mention that Sue has an ACRE of land with her house?

Did I also mention that Sue's lawnmower was a PUSH mower?

Yes, I was in hell.
All of a sudden, the clouds opened up and a flock of angels bathed in a most brilliant light came down upon me. They granted me a miracle. The lawn mower was SELF PROPELLED!!!!

It was almost as heavenly of an experience as going to Lowe's AND Home Depot with a credit card that has no limit! You guys out there know exactly what I mean.
Anyway, as I'm gliding, nay..FROLICKING along while mowing the lawn, I notice that Joe hasn't arrived as of yet. He was well over 45 minutes late! The little shit had not shown!! Luckily, about the same time I was plotting his untimely demise, he showed up. Sue had given him directions, but left out a few forks in the road coming to her house. Literally. He'd come to a fork in the road and took the wrong one and gotten lost.
It was a funny thing when Sue asked me why I wasn't even breaking a sweat while mowing. She told me that she'd mowed a week ago and had one hell of a time pushing the mower. Turns out, she had NO idea what a self-propelled mower is. She'd not engaged the mechanism, thus making it like pushing a Buick across the yard! Not to mention the fact that she'd had the wheels raised a good six inches off the ground!! Sorry, but I had to chuckle!
So we FINALLY get done well after dark. It's not easy mowing by moon and flood light, but we got it done! Sue was very appreciative to say the least. She was SO happy that her yard looked decent! She was also relieved that she'd been told how to work the mower too!
Anyone who's read my blog lately knows how down and out I've felt lately, but after having done something to help this girl out, I felt better than I have in a LONG time! It's amazing how something so simple as mowing the lawn for someone can be such an amazing experience..for the simple fact that you've helped someone who needed it.
Now for the not so great part. Sue is still in "temp" status at work. Everyone in the group that I trained with got an offer to go permanent..except for Sue. At least as of yet she's not gotten an official offer...I'm praying she gets one next week, because if she doesn't get the perm status, she may very well lose her job altogether! She cried on and off all day about it. I felt so horrible for her.

If everyone out there could say a little prayer for her it'd be greatly appreciated.
So that's about all for tonight. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend!
